Being a fabrication company our customer thought it would be OK to use his own employees to attempt a repair as the door was catching up on the way down. It is still unclear why the curtain become disconnected from the barrel at the top of the door opening but the end result was that one side of the curtain came crashing down to the floor narrowly missing somebody operating the shutter. Our Engineers will have the shutter back up and operating on a temporary basis today and within a couple of days have it fully operational again. Unfortunately for this customer a possible £100 call out visit to solve a minor problem will become a very expensive major repair job.

Working in conjunction with an existing High Speed Door the Air Barrier will operate when the door starts to open to provide continues protection against dust and flying insects entering the building even whilst personnel and fork lift trucks are passing through the opening. This particular door opening has a high amount of traffic and had been highlighted as the main point of entry for Flying Insects. Preventing the Flying Insects from entering the building will drastically reduce the amount of time, effort and money currently spent on using conventional control methods.

Enershield Air Barrier - Industrial

In this case an additional benefit for Jardox will be a reduction in energy costs during the winter months as the Air Barrier will also minimise temperature loss whilst the High Speed Door is open.

So what is an Air Barrier? The Enershield Air Barrier creates a “virtual door” by re-circulating ambient air and forcing it across an opening to create up to a 90% seal. The seal separates the atmospheres on either side and stops the transfer of temperature, humidity, dust, odours and insects. With just a draught of air creating the barrier, vehicles and pedestrians can pass without obstruction.

GOOD ARTICLE REGARDING TRAILER CREEP AND THE POSSIBLE FAILINGS ASSOCIATED WITH HAVING A MANUAL WHEEL CHOCK POLICY. A VIRTUALLY DAMAGE FREE / ZERO TRIP HAZARD / MAINTENANCE FREE SOLUTION TO PREVENT TRAILER CREEP AND UNAUTHORISED LOADING BAY DRIVE OFF INCIDENTS IS THE CALEMATIC AUTOMATIC WHEEL CHOCKING SYSTEM.

Features:
- Completely flush with yard floor when stowed away so very difficult to damage & ideal when there is restricted room for vehicles turning to reverse on to a Loading Bay.
- Keeps operatives out of potentially hazardous yard area as system is fully automated and triggered by opening & closing the Loading Bay Door.
- Designed to be maintenance free & unaffected by typical Loading Bay debris.
- Unaffected by snow or ice & will even operate when submerged.
- Simple construction with only 5 mechanical parts per chock and no complicated sensors or control system. NO motors, bearings, chains, gears, hydraulics or grease.
- Operated by low pressure compressed air so eliminates potential Health & Safety or Environmental hazards associated with electrical or hydraulic operation respectively.
- Zero trip hazards as there are no surface mounted parts between adjacent vehicles when in use & completely flush with floor level when not in use.

Flying Insects can be a major problem for food related businesses. Existing legislation can mean a food processing company being penalised if they do not take steps to protect against flying insect ingress. Electric Fly Killers are a common way to deal with this issue but obviously the flying insects are then already in the building. Some of the various methods to prevent flying insects from actually getting into the building include Insect Screens for windows and personnel doors and PVC Strip Curtains.

PVC Strip Curtain

Especially on larger openings suitable for Fork Lift Trucks or Vehicles there can be problems with PVC Strip Curtains due to poor visibility. Over time they can become scuffed and dirty which prevents clear vision through the curtain causing a health and safety issue especially where Fork Lift Trucks are concerned. High Speed Doors can be used and are a good option although for door openings with high traffic volumes can spend a lot of time in the open position. A solution for this problem is to use an Enershield Air Barrier supplied and installed by C-Mech Services Ltd.

Preventing dust and flying insect ingress

This method is not designed to replace a door but to automatically start working when the door is opened. Working in conjunction with a standard Roller Shutter, Sectional Door or a High Speed Door an Air Barrier provides continues protection against dust and flying insects entering the building even whilst personnel, fork lift trucks or vehicles are passing through the opening.

A major benefit of Air Barriers is to reduce energy costs by minimising temperature loss across a door opening. They can also minimise the transfer of humid ambient air into large freezers to reduce ice and frost build up.

C-Mech have received an order to install Enershield Air Barriers to three 5m x 5m Warehouse Door Openings to help Ecotherm Insulation (UK) Ltd maintain the optimum temperature for storing their Rigid Insulation Products. This is critically important to Ecotherm because if the temperature drops too far below the optimum it can negatively affect the normally high quality of the product. Apart from maintaining quality standards Ecotherm also hope to see a noticable reduction in the energy used to heat the warehouse.

The Air Barriers will work in conjunction with 3 existing Rapid Fold Doors which will be fully refurbished by C-Mech.

Enershield Air Barriers create a “virtual door” by re-circulating ambient air and forcing it across an opening to create up to a 90% seal.
Save energy: Escalating energy costs mean rising fuel bills. Where doors are opening and closing frequently or always open due to a high volume of traffic your heating or chilling costs will be a major and increasing expense.

With reduced energy consumption typical installation’s provide a conservative Return On Investment of less than 2 years and in some cases less than 1 year.

Reduced demand on your heating or chilling systems reduces servicing costs and increases their life expectancy.

Atmospheric separation. This means airborne problems like dust, insects, smoke, traffic fumes and odours are all prevented from passing through Enershield.

Stabilised temperature and control of contaminants gives improved production quality

Air Barrier v Air Curtain. Air Barriers should not be confused with a heated warm air curtain, whose primary design objective is to provide warmth at an open doorway. Without a proper seal over an open door, your expensively heated or air conditioned air, along with the warm air blast from a typical heated air curtain is immediately conveyed to the outside. Traditionally a typical 5Kw air curtain will operate 8 hours per day, 5 days per week will consume in excess of £1,000 of electricity per annum. Under the same conditions an Enershield Air Barrier will consume £60 of electricity per annum.

With the recent addition of the LZR®- i100 sensor, Guthrie Douglas now offers the complete intelligent door package. Offering best-in-class drives, activation and safety devices for automated doors. Outstanding functionality and safety go without saying but these products also provide cost and energy savings too.

Safedrive

The complete package works to open doors only when required, close them as soon as it is safe to do so, and set as fast as possible opening and closing speeds. Changes in temperature within the building are therefore kept to a minimum. This is becoming increasingly important as local authorities and businesses face rising heating/energy costs and pressure to meet green agendas.

Intelligent drives:

The Safedrive® Fi drive system has been specifically developed for powering a range of non-balanced doors where speed, frequency of use and durability are key requirements. Opening and closing speeds can be set by entering the required drive rpm, therefore doors can be open and closed in the fastest time possible reducing heat loss or gain.

Intelligent opening:

Both the Falcon and Condor sensors make energy savings possible by keeping false activations to a minimum. They ignore traffic moving away from the door, opening the door only when the vehicle or pedestrian moves towards it. They can also filter pedestrians to detect vehicles only and reject parallel traffic. Both sensors are unaffected by door vibrations and have a high immunity to rain and snow.

Condor Sensor

Intelligent safety:

The Milan presence detector keeps the door open when a vehicle or pedestrian is in the detection field. That means it’s safe to speed up the timer controlling the interval between the door opening and starting to close.

The Condor sensor was the first dual technology sensor for automated industrial doors. It’s not only a motion sensor but an advanced presence detector too, detecting vehicles and/or pedestrians even when they are stationary. That means it can activate the door to close immediately after a vehicle has passed – no waiting for a timer.

The Guthrie Douglas Wireless Safety Edge is the ideal companion to the Safedrive® Fi and Condor on high-speed doors. Unlike the spiral cables on traditional safety edges, it’s immune to the wear and tear caused by high-speed doors.

The LZR®-i100 is a premium safety solution for intelligent doors. It’s ideally suited for applications where safety edges cannot be fitted, such as large openings or windy locations where flexible doors may deform. Its high-precision laser technology gives safety at opening and closing thanks to two separate detection areas – again allowing doors to remain open for the shortest possible time.

TS970 Control Panel

Intelligent control panels:

The Guthrie Douglas TS970 and TS981 control panels enable auto-closure of the door, with the time between the door opening and starting to close variable between 1 and 240 seconds. The panels also allow doors to be part-opened – cutting the time they would take to fully open and then close.

Carrying on C-Mech’s increase in business from the latter part of 2010 orders have been received for 5 Automated High Speed Doors at Tarkett in Lenham and 3 Energy Saving Rapid Roll Doors at Berry Gardens in Linton. This style of Door has been chosen in order to optimise traffic flow and to drastically reduce energy loss that occurs when using a conventional Door or Shutter for applications with high traffic and/or in an area that is heated or chilled. Both companies have been using C-Mech for Industrial Door repairs & installations for some years so apart from having confidence in getting excellent after sales service from a local company there was also trust in C-Mech to select the correct solution for their particular applications. For more information on Energy Saving Solutions for Industrial Openings please use this link http://c-mech.co.uk/money-saving/reduce-energy-bills/
